Students set to ‘shine’ on Saturday Post a comment
Hundreds of returning Mount Allison students will be out in full force this Saturday shining shoes, painting faces, washing cars and doing whatever else they can to lend a helping hand in the community.
Their efforts are part of a continuing tradition for the university students, who take to the streets every year during “Shine Day” to raise funds for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
This year the goal has been set at an ambitious $17,000 but Mount A’s Shinerama co-ordinator Natasha Gosselin says she is optimistic that target will easily be met.  (more)  03/09/08 10:28 PM

Girl raises funds for animal shelter, learns valuable business skills Post a comment
When seven-year-old Danika Fawcett set out to raise funds for her favorite animal shelter this summer, she relied on an age-old trusted method of making some cash.
Danika, with some help from her grandmother Amy Cormier, set up a lemonade stand along a busy stretch of road in Dorchester on a sunny day last month, selling cool drinks and delicious cupcakes to many thirsty and hungry customers.
“We thought it would be something fun to do,” said Danika from her grandmother’s home last week, “while raising money for the shelter.”
And raise money they did.  (more)  03/09/08 10:28 PM

Researchers study shrimp to learn more about shorebirds Post a comment
They might be shrimp but you wouldn't want them in your cocktail.
This summer, researchers from Mount Allison University have been making trips out to the Bay of Fundy mudflats to gather mud shrimp.
Diana Hamilton is the professor  leading a team of student researchers in search of the shrimp.
It's part of a project to study the eating habits of shorebirds and to find out if those habits are different between day and night.
Hamilton said the group has no idea what to expect when they look at the availability of food during the different times of day.
"Nobody's ever done it."  (more)  03/09/08 10:28 PM

Recent arts, culture report paints an interesting picture Post a comment
It is often noted with the shifting global economy that, in the big picture, manufacturing jobs are on the decline. If that’s the case, the followup question goes: what goods or services are replacing them?
One ‘good’ that might not leap to mind is arts and culture. A study from the Conference Board of Canada in collaboration with the Department of Canadian Heritage claims that culture generated $84.6 billion in direct and indirect economic benefits over the past year.  (more)  03/09/08 10:28 PM

Football Mountie coaches, players prepare to open season Post a comment
While the trio of excellence - quarterback Kelly Hughes, corner Jermaine Oram and all-Canadian Gary Ross - will again lead the Mounties as they attempt to regain some lost lustre, it will necesarily be a total team effort and coaches and players alike are confident some new systems and a fresh approach to coaching will go a considerable distance in accomplishing team goals.  (more)  03/09/08 10:28 PM

Rising jazz star bringing her talent to Sackville Post a comment
She may be only 32 but Emilie-Claire Barlow has been dazzling the world with her stunningly beautiful voice for more than two decades.
Starting out her career at the tender age of seven, voice acting for television and radio jingles, kids may know her best from her character roles on Sailor Moon, 6Teen, Rescue Heroes, and Total Drama Island, just to name a few.
Music lovers, however, will recognize Barlow as Canada’s up-and-coming rising star on the international jazz music scene, the Toronto-based musician who recently brought home the female vocalist of the year award from the 2008 National Jazz Awards and who was recently nominated for a Juno award for vocal jazz album of the year for her most recent compilation The Very Thought Of You.  (more)  03/09/08 10:28 PM
